Police hand out kits to enable residents to mark property

MORE than 200 SmartWater kits have been given out to Derbyshire Dales residents .

The free kits were issued to people living in Ashbourne and Tansley on an operation led by Derbyshire Dales District Council and Derbyshire police.

And the campaign team is returning to Ashbourne's Shawcroft car park on Thursday from 2pm to 8pm with more free fits and good advice.

SmartWater is an invisible liquid that fluoresces green under ultra-violet light and contains a unique forensic fingerprint.

Police say it links property to its owner and criminals to a crime scene.

Council leader Councillor Lewis Rose said: "While Derbyshire Dales remains one of the safest places in the UK to live, work and visit, we refuse to be complacent and the operation in Ashbourne was a speedy response to a series of burglaries in the Trees Estate area of the town."
