Police hoping BNP will move festival away from village
DERBYSHIRE police say they hope the British National Party will confirm an alternative venue for its annual Red, White and Blue festival.
Speaking after a meeting last night, Superintendent Howard Veigas said the event, held for the past three years in Denby, led to "the same community suffering year after year" from the upheaval it brings to local residents.

POLICE PRESENCE: Ch Supt Gary Sherwood last night addressing a meeting of Denby villagers about the policing of the BNP's Red, White and Blue festival.
Supt Veigas said: "The police do not feel it is a suitable location for the festival.
"We have great concerns that it is such an imposition and a huge disruption to the local community.
"But if it has to come back we will have to take on the organisation."
His comments came after BNP councillor Lewis Allsebrook told the meeting at Denby Church of England School, in Church Street, that the party was looking at "two or three alternative locations" for the event.
Mr Allsebrook, who represents Heanor West on Amber Valley Borough Council, reiterated that the party may move its festival away from Derbyshire.
He said: "The BNP is looking at alternative sites. The decision would be made at a central level.
"We came here to listen to what everyone has had to say and we are going to take on board their views."
Around 20 villagers turned up at last night's meeting.
Almost all praised the police for the way they handled this year's event, which saw 18 people arrested – four supporters of the BNP and 14 protesters. One man, who did not wish to be named, said: "It was a fantastic job by the police. I felt very secure knowing they were there."
Another resident told the meeting: "I think the police response was absolutely excellent in the way they handled the different interest groups."
Villagers at the meeting, which was organised by the police to seek residents' views on the way the force handled the event, were shown video footage taken from a police helicopter.
It showed demonstrators, marshalled by officers and police on horseback, as they marched down Heanor Road to a designated protest point on Codnor-Denby Lane.
Police formed a cordon but were pushed back twice as the protesters shoved their way through.
Chief Superintendent Garry Sherwood, Commander for the Constabulary's A Division, which covers Amber Valley, told the meeting: "It reminded me of when I started policing more than 20 years ago – a thin blue line with arms linked."

“Chris-
I acknowledge there are concerns about immigration- but also alongside a great deal of whipping up of fears in the Press, egged on by people like Michael Howard previously.
I think we need to get the whole picture in perspective, and hear clear facts instead of just prejudices from some quarters.
I also acknowledge you are not a supporter of the Labour party, which I respect.
However, events pre WWII 70 years ago seems a bit of a leap- and I'm sure all kind of facts like these could be extrapalated across all parties to back up an argument.
My basic view is that despite genuine concerns about "immigration"- the policies and ideology of the BNP leadership are not justified, and in fact many believe to be fundamentally racist. I don't believe most of the voters to be so; it is the leadership and its methods which I find totally misleading- and which seemed blatantly obvious, aired on Question Time recently.
I think they are capitalizing on people's fears, which are especially heightened during these times of recession.
I also acknowledge that perhaps some of Labour's so called traditional "white working class" voters have defected to other parties....however, I feel a lot depends on an economic recovery, and in my view, Labour making a stronger effort to reconnect with its traditional roots and voters.
I wasn't a huge fan of New Labour either- but it was the appeal to a wider section of voters that won the elections.
There is still huge support out there for Labour,(not always seen on these pages, but plenty elsewhere;)- many of us feel the party must strongly reconnect with its "core" voters, and communicate clearly the acheivements and aspirations, instead of always being on the defensive from media led stories.
What I'd actually like to hear are BALANCED views!”

“Speaking about immigration, racial integration and the European colonisation of this country MUST be allowed as these were all products of recent Governments and their policies.
We should be allowed to discuss them without being spat at or vilified; it's called a "democracy" and I should know; I used to live in one.”

“Joanne - how can we have what you call a "clear headed debate" when every time anyone objects to the flooding of our cuntry by immigrants. asylum seekers, and economic migrants, the left and the politically correct brigate immediately start screaming "racism".
THAT is the whole point. This disasterous policy has been imposed on the British population by this dicredited government and ALL opposition has been squashed by spurious accusations of "racism".
The real facists are not the BNP. The REAL facists are the government determined to use "political correctness" to stifle free speech and any opposition to its lunatic policies.”

“I have been reading some interesting political history articles about Fascism and Ozwald Mozley.
Mozley was a Labour MP who formed the British Union of Fascists in 1931.
He stood in a by-election for Ashton Under-Lyme in 1931, splitting the vote and reducing a Labour majority which in turn allowed the Conservatives to win the seat.
It is interesting to see on recent TV programmes, that the BNP is attracting "disaffected" Labour voters who fear mass immigration problems that are affecting the lives of so many people who were born in tthe UK.
It is also rather intriguing that Mozley supported the idea of one single European government and a European State! He tried to form a European National Party to bring this about. This is also the Labour policy - we have been denied a referendum and now e see a real possibility of getting a European President, President Blair, or will it be President Milliband? the man who does not want the post - but if it were offered to him, he'd accept no doubt?
The Asylum/Migration problem is real and serious, we have experienced a lot of problems in my area due to lack of community cohesion and language barriers that cannot be surmounted (70 languages are spoken in an area the size of a small housing estate!).
The media has barely touched on the problem and we need our elected MPs and other elected representatives to first admit that there is a problem and then to deal with it if the BNP are to be discredited and defeated.”

“I've just had a quick check on the web; please see:
"Alan Johnson gets a pat on the back for "honest appraisal" of immigration."(Times online.)
And:
"Alan Johnson:Labour has made mistakes on immigration."(Guardian.)
I'd also like to question how this situation has developed over many years, and how it's been reported in the national media.(eg following Michael Howard's campaign.)
I think what's needed is a clear headed debate, not hysteria.
For example- the term, "immigrants" covers a huge section of the population, and not just illegal assylum seekers.”

“I suggest those of you who think the BNP incite racial hatred go take a look at Lord Pearson's speech in America recently.
Have you already forgotten that Labour have admitted flooding the country with immigrants to annoy the Conservatives?
It seems to me that your anger is directed at the wrong people.
I for one will be voting BNP again. One million people - and rising - cannot be wrong.”

“Jo. Please change the record, its stuck.
Your pro-immigration, good for you. You've obviously never been affected by the actions of some of these people.
Others have posted on here because they have a different opinion, maybe they've seen activities from immigrants that they don't agree with.
Try to understand their point of view, its called free speech.
Seeing as the arrest total was 14-4 in favour of the protesters, perhaps you should argue why 14 of your 'team' chose to break the law.”
