A THIEF on a bicycle raided a shop on the hottest day of the year wearing a raincoat, hoodie, army combat trousers, peaked cap and sunglasses.

He took a bottle of water to the counter but grabbed some change when the till was opened at the Fourways store, Park Road, Heage.

The man – who had a goatee beard – then ran from the shop and pedalled off. He was chased by a customer but escaped in the direction of Street Lane.

"He would be sweating by the time he was done," said Francis Fretwell, owner of the convenience store.

The raid took place between 4.45pm and 5pm on Tuesday while two women staff were changing shifts.

Belper police are investigating and hope someone may remember seeing a cyclist wearing heavy clothing in the bright sunshine.

If anyone can help to identify him, call 0345 123 3333.
