Derby County are hoping it will be a case of second time lucky when it comes to Conor Sammon, who they may want to take on a season-long loan.

They missed out on the Wigan Athletic striker 18 months ago, when he moved from Kilmarnock for £600,000.

The 25-year-old Dublin-born player started his career with Cherry Orchard, before signing a scholarship deal with University College Dublin Association Football Club ahead of the 2005 season.

He made 83 appearances and scored 19 goals during his spell there, including the goal which beat Derry City in the FAI Cup quarter-final at the Brandywell.

His performance caught the eye of Derry City, who signed him in December 2007 on a three-year deal. The club paid compensation to UCD for the then 21-year-old striker, as he was under 24.

By the time Derry signed Sammon, he had won three Republic of Ireland Under-21 caps and also played in the Republic Under-23 select which defeated Slovakia.

But while attracting the attention of a number of Scottish clubs, Sammon was unable to hold down a regular first-team place with Derry. He signed a three-year deal with Kilmarnock in July 2008 for an undisclosed fee.

Sammon enjoyed great success with Kilmarnock, scoring 25 goals in 76 appearances. He hit 18 goals in 27 games in the 2010/11 season alone.

In January 2011, having turned down a move to Championship side Scunthorpe, Sammon signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

Boss Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: "Conor is a young, hungry player we have been looking at for a while.

"He has developed in an incredible manner over the last six months and it's fortunate that we've been able to move for him before he has achieved his full potential, which we're hoping he will do in a Latics shirt. We are delighted to welcome him on board."

In December last year, Wigan successfully appealed Sammon's red card against Manchester United, with the Football Association confirming he would not serve a suspension.

Sammon was shown a red card during the Latics' 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

It remains to be seen whether the Rams will make a move to catch Sammon.

“Times are bad at the Pride, half the players are gone and Glick is about to join em.
We are still looking to bring in loan players that can't get a look in at there own clubs.
Big changes are neared at Derby be for we free fall to the lower Divs.
I for one tend to vote with my feet and stay away till big promises are full filled by the board.
We are been stripped to the bare bones as far as players are concerned.”

“Perhaps if they cannot net Sammon ,the Rams should use a rod and line It would make a change from throwing their star catches back in the deep after a short spell in the keep net.
Come on Glick get your finger out before you swan off to the City.
Don't forget you will be a little fish in a big pond when you get up there.”
