THERE will be a public protest outside Derby's Council House over plans to scrap some CCTV cameras in the city.

Boulton ward councillor Ranjit Banwait will be leading it next Wednesday from 10am.

He will be joined by traders, customers and local residents who will be handing in a petition of more than 2,000 names against the council's plan to remove some cameras, including some in Allenton shopping centre and invest more in those in the city centre.

Mr Banwait said: "The residents who have signed the petition are from all over Derby and from South Derbyshire.

"They have heard the expert advice from the council in support of the proposals but still believe that the removal of cameras will weaken security and deterrence.

"To show our feelings to the decision-makers we will be holding a public protest outside the council house, where we will also hand in the petition."

Plans to scrap 26 CCTV cameras across the city came close to being passed at a council cabinet meeting in June.

However, the decision was postponed so that more consultation with the scrutiny management commission could take place.

The commission met this week and came up with recommendations they will put to cabinet.

These include consulting with the public, councillors and neighbourhood boards before removing cameras.
