Pupils may strike oil...in classroom
A NEW CD-Rom designed by the University of Derby aims to bring geology to life for sixth-formers.
Students are being encouraged to search for oil using real-life seismic data – but all from the comfort of their classrooms.
The university has been working on a £20,000 project with the British Geological Survey to create the interactive learning geology resource for students.
It has been warmly received by two exam boards, who are set to use it in teacher training sessions, and by the Earth Science Teachers' Association. Project leaders hope the tool can inspire a new generation of geologists and geophysicists to help address an international shortage in the industry.
Professor Chris King, professor of earth science education at Keele University, said: "There is an international shortage of geophysicists, so anything which can help inspire students to consider this career path is welcome."
