Question still stands on need for commissioner
EARLIER this year, you published my letter concerning my opinion on the appointment of police commissioners and how I felt them to be completely unnecessary.
This was because the previous system, under which I served as a police officer for 25 years, was completely adequate. I was therefore not surprised to see the new commissioner has started empire building by seeking a deputy.
I wonder if this will be followed by them both requiring secretaries, office accommodation, cars for their convenience, police officers taken from their normal duties to escort them round the county etc.
The cost for all of this would far exceed the stated salary of the commissioner by many thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money, for a very negligible result.

It was stated on their appointment the commissioner would not be responsible for the deployment and use of staff and resources – this still being the responsibility of the Chief Constable.
So the question I posed in my last letter – what will they do that is not being done already? In legal jargon, I rest my case.
