SICK attackers had maimed two rabbits found in a Derby street in what has been described as a "cruel" and "bizarre" incident.

The 10-month-old animals had each had an ear and a foot cut off.

Vets have confirmed the injuries had been caused intentionally several months before the male rabbits were found in a lane in Shelton Lock.

The animals, which have been called Benjamin and Peter, have been found new homes.

They are among 260 animals which have been rehomed in Derby this year.

Karen Carter, community manager at the RSPCA Derby and District Branch, said: "We may never know why these rabbits were injured. It's difficult to understand why someone would do this.

"What is more bizarre is that these rabbits must have been with someone following the incident.

"The injuries have completely healed over, so why would they then dump them now?"

RSPCA officials said a member of the public found the animals near Sinfin Avenue, on Saturday, August 21.

They cared for the rabbits over the weekend, before taking them to the city branch of the national charity, in Abbey Street, on the following Monday.

It is not known whether the animals were abandoned or had escaped and nothing is known about their previous owners.

Both were taken to Blagreaves Veterinary Centre, in Blagreaves Lane, Littleover and were examined by Dr Abdul Rehman.

He gave both animals a clean bill of health but said the injuries had been caused deliberately with some sort of sharp object.

He also confirmed they had been inflicted about four to five months ago and had since healed over.

Dr Rehman said: "Because the rabbits were very young when it happened, they have learned to adapt to their disabilities and are coping very well."

Anyone interested in re-homing an animal should contact the branch on Derby 344620.

“Stop with the grooming you two!!!

This is a story about some sicko practicing before going on to bigger things... perhaps on someone close to you!

    And you're squabbling!?!

Don't you agree this warped individual needs catching, at the very least...

Save your energy for what counts!”

“Rams Fan. It is also your prerogative to hide behind a pseudonym as it is for New Dragon and others, but you would show more balls if you came out from behind the mask and let us see who you are - if you dare? On the other hand I don¿t think most of us really care!”

    “Andrew:

It's called a 'response' and is directed 'in response' to a 'response' directed at me. This is my prerogative, to respond in kind.

It is *your* prerogative to determine that which you find offensive and report it if you are so inclined. I know these as facts, but thank you for the refresher.”

    “Rams Fan,

I am sorry to have to write this but I think the only way forward is for the DET to ban you & New Dragon for life.

As you have just shown with your last comment all you want to do is engage in petty arguments with everyone.

I for one will continue to report you to the DET on every single article you write that contains any form of abuse sarcasm or personal attack........”

“So your professed size doesn't mean you have to resort to puerile behaviour, but then you talk about Billy Goats anyway..?

"Do as I say, not as I do" isn't the way forward.”

    “Rams Fan, Dragon.

I'm bigger than both of you.

But that doesn't mean I have to resort to the kind of puerile behaviour that you two display.

Behave like men (if indeed either of you are) and meet somewhere quiet and beat each other over the head with bits of celery until you get fed up and have to run home for tea.

Either that or behave like you haven't got wild orange hair, live under bridges and have a psychotic fear of Billy Goats.

    'nuff said.”
