DERBY County's interest in this season's FA Cup has been ended at the fourth round stage by Premier League side Stoke City.

The Potters won 2-0 at Pride Park Stadium thanks to an early strike from Cameron Jerome and a late second from Robert Huth.

The Rams battled gamely but could not avoid their first defeat of 2012, leaving them to now focus solely on their Championship campaign.

Derby striker Theo Robinson failed to shake off a calf injury he picked up in last weekend's goalless draw at Burnley, so he was replaced by fit-again midfielder Jeff Hendrick, while James Bailey retained his place after recovering from illness.

As a result, Craig Bryson was employed in an advanced role behind lone front man Callum Ball.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise place on the bench for Nathan Tyson, who has missed the previous four games due to sickness and an ongoing groin problem.

Scottish forward Chris Maguire was also named as one of Derby's seven substitutes, with young defender Tom Naylor added to the bench as well.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis made four changes to his side, with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, full-back Andy Wilkinson, midfielder Dean Whitehead and strikerJerome coming into the starting line-up.

It did not take the Potters long to make the breakthrough - perhaps unsurprisingly from a set piece.

After a corner from the left was taken short, Glen Whelan whipped the ball low into the box, Marc Wilson flicked it on and Huth also got a touch before Jerome smashed home a volley from close range.

It was the first goal Derby had conceded this year - after going nearly seven hours without letting one in.

Jerome headed over from Whelan's free kick after 20 minutes, before Ryan Shawcross was booked for tripping the ever-alert Bryson.

The Rams might have levelled in the 27th minute.

James Bailey released Bryson down the right and his cross was cleared only as far as Paul Green, whose shot was blocked by Whitehead.

The danger remained, though, and when Wilkinson headed away another ball into the middle, Hendrick fired narrowly wide from 15 yards.

Stoke nearly doubled their lead, however, on the half-hour - Huth heading a Matthew Etherington corner from the right against a post.

Jamie Ward was causing the visitors problems down the left wing and he was frustrated not to get a foul when he went down under the challenge of Wilkinson, very close to the penalty area, having been sent clear by Hendrick.

Ward did win a free kick in a good position just before the break after being brought down by Whitehead as the Rams ended the half strongly but Stoke stood firm.

Bogovic almost gifted the Rams a chance 10 minutes into the second half when he inexplicably headed the ball clear on the edge of his area but Bryson's header back in just evaded Ball in a good position.

The Stoke keeper was in action again after 57 minutes, tipping Green's deep free kick from the right behind, with Shaun Barker lurking.

At the other end, Frank Fielding did well to divert Matthew Ehterington's fierce cross-shot over the bar after the winger had beaten Jason Shackell on the right.

Pulis brought on Jermaine Pennant and Kenwyne Jones for Etherington and Peter Crouch after the hour.

Pennant went close in the 73rd minute with a free kick from all of 30 yards out, Fielding scrambling to his right to push the ball away to safety.

Jonathan Walters then glanced a header narrowly over from a Pennant corner as Stoke looked to settle the tie.

Ricardo Fuller replaced Jerome in the closing stages, while Clough introduced Tyson for Bailey.

Stoke's second goal came in the 81st minute.

Pennant's corner from the right reached Huth, whose low volley from 10 yards went under Fielding and crept over the line.

There was no way back from here for the Rams, though there was time for brief cameos from Jake Buxton and Naylor, who came on for his first-team debut.

“Glorified pub side. I wouldnt go and watch them for free. If thats what you have to play to stop in the top division you can keep it. With a bit more creativity we wouls have battered them no probs. Have to admit the man of the match gave the biggest laugh I've had all year!!!!!!!!!!!”

“I thought Derby did very well against Stoke... every time we had the ball we tried to pass it about and play football only to be knocked out of our stride by any means necessary by our prem opponents, they seem to just get in the way most times and make it look Not a Foul when 9 out of 10 times it is 4 yellows to 0 tells a story in itself but fair play i suppose and Stoke maybe just about deserved to win the game But Derby have a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season and beyond and yesterdays game should give the team a lot of confidence C O Y R”

“Think we were a little bit robbed. An offside goal. A Stoke player should have been sent for 2 yellow card tackles. Hand ball just in the box and no penalty.
Seems Prem Refs look after Prem teams.
If it had been Derby fouling all the time we would have ended up with 8 or 9 men.”

“A bit of a reality check I guess on just how far off we are in terms of building a team that can compete in the Premiership?

As soon as I saw the 4-5-1 formation I figured the outcome would be fairly predictable.

Hey ho, I just hope the defeat doesn't knock the confidence as we could easily be looking at 3 defeats in 7 days with these fixtures coming up. Barnsley can be as good as they are sometimes bad and Forest, well, lowly as they are they've got a victory in them. I just hope the form guide for once in local Derby counts!”

“We have to give credit where credit is due ,Stoke play
the best Rugby type hoofball in the country.
They are great also at barging, tripping and generally fouling
    at every opportunity.
It also helps if you have a ''12th man'' in Clatenfool the ref ,who
struts around using his vast knowledge of prem players and ignoring
shouts for what are blatant fouls from your team after the ''bouncer''
type stoke player yet again barges over another attack from the rams.

but, sour grapes to one side we never gave up ,showed stoke how to play
the beautiful game but, have a fair way to go in our quest to beat soundly
teams such as them if and when we get the chance...
    keep the faith ...
    COYR.”

“The first 20 minutes were dreadful. Ward looked good but that was about it. . Hendrick may get there in time. Shakel and Barker gave real effort, a lot of effort but no 'premier league' talent. Stoke almost went to sleep but were still able to have a shut out.”

“Mazza58 read my post properly it says POSITIVES today m8, about Greeny, Ward & balanced with glad we got 3 points at home
There was probably 33,010 different opinions about todays game that's what makes football and other sports so good we don't all see the same things and it gives us talking and debating points afterwards
Paul Derby as you know 100% what happened maybe you would share with the rest of us to prove what I said isn't what really happened, or are you just repeating the spin which comes of off the website ?”

“Believe i heard radio ga ga say we are one point better off
    then this time last year...

Though i would take anything the VERY poor two collins say
with a pinch of salt they are that bad.

A great result and game yesterday and full deserved.

Ignore anything you read about C.Riggott and Nigel ,i suppose
when they cant shout for his head because we have won they
    have to make stuff up.

From all accounts Riggott had to concede his body could not compete
at this level anymore the reserve games having told him that , he loved
Clough for giving him a chance.

Bring on the West Spam sat.”
