DERBY County want to extend the loan of Fredrik Stoor, providing the Swedish defender can shake of an ankle injury.

Stoor (left) will miss tonight's game against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium after badly twisting his ankle in Saturday's draw at Leicester.

The 25-year-old right-back, who has helped the Rams keep consecutive clean sheets, is also doubtful for Saturday's home clash with Queens Park Rangers. His initial one-month loan from Fulham expires after the QPR game.

"So long as Freddie is going to be fit a week after that, we'll look to extend the loan because he's settled in and done very well indeed," said manager Nigel Clough.

"But if he's not going to be fit, there's no point in doing that.

"We'd then try to pick it up after the international break in November.

"Freddie looks very comfortable on the ball and he's quick. We needed a little bit more pace in the side and even at right-back, it helps.

"I think he's improved as each game has gone on. His ankle has reduced in size since Saturday. It was badly swollen after the game."

After QPR, the Rams are away at Ipswich and at home to Coventry City before the next international break.

"It just depends on how quickly Freddie recovers because there are only two games after Saturday," said Clough.

"So if he is going to be fit for those, we will extend the loan. If he is going to be doubtful, then there will not be much point."

Derby are still searching the loan market and Clough has revealed that calls have been made about bringing players in on loan with a view to a permanent deal in the January transfer window.

"We have a few targets for January and if there is any way we can bring them in now, initially on loan, then it would give them two months to settle. That is something we would like to do," said Clough.

"A few phone calls have gone in, so we'll have to wait and see."

Clough confirmed that Derby have asked about Ipswich forward Jon Stead (left).

"I don't think there is any movement in that direction at the moment," added Clough.

Stead, 26, scored three goals in 17 appearances in a three-month loan spell with the Rams in 2006.

Derby still have a long list of injured players, including Paul Green, Stephen Pearson, Miles Addison, Steve Davies, Chris Porter and James Vaughan.

"It is the second half of the season when we are looking to get everyone fit," said Clough.

"With Porter, Green, Vaughan, Davies and a couple of signings on top, then we will be a different team."

“Thank god there are some people on here who understand football!!! I'm talking about Igor, Ilson & Ollie, Brixton. Jon Stead was so good for us when he was here - if i remember correctly we were six points clear at the top of the championship when he left, & in the end and we just about scraped through to the play offs after all the players Billy Davies brought in January - the second half of that season was poor and carried on to the season after in the prem!! I compare Stead to Heskey really, a real team player, works so hard but some people ony look at the goal tally & not the bigger picture! I've never seen a forward run the channels as much as Stead and pull defenders out of position since he left - one of the reasons Steve Howard was our talisman that season. I would personally love to see Stead back, but if it's a no-goer, i think we ought to go for someone with pace, someone who can stretch defences & carry a real goal threat, someone like Simeon Jackson at Gillingham as i've mentioned before. He looks a real prospect!”

“May as well get Stern John in too and be done with it.

Nobody is better than 'anybody' in my opinion but I do have faith in Clough's judgement....so if it will be it will be.”

“Stoor is class in this league, he should be one to keep permanently come Jan. Stead is the type of player Hulse needs to support him, I don't remember any forward working harder for us than he did and we had a great run of results when he was here, (its not just about goals to game ratio for a forward), he can also play wider when formations change so is a great optiion. Forget Barnes he looked a shadow of his former self before getting this latest injury, I am putting absolutely no faith in him ever returning and being an influence for us. Keep going Nigel you will prove any doubters wrong, I would like to see 10 players taken out of all Championship squads and see how they cope! Not many could stand that kind of injury list for any time like we have.”

“Oh God, not Stead. And apparently a loan with the intention of a long term signing. He was a slow, ineffective, boring player when we had him last. There's a reason he moves clubs every 6 months. It's how long it takes for managers to realise that he's rubbish. I was so happy when old Billy Goat Gruff couldn't buy him because he wanted to go to the Prem. And a great success he was there! I can't see his strike rate stats on the internet because you need a microscope.”

“I think bringing jon stead in would be going backwards 3 goals in 17 games is not a good return”
