DEREK Randall scored a run for each of his years and added five more for good measure in his first appearance of the season for Matlock.

The 57-year-old former England and Nottinghamshire star opened the innings at Causeway Lane on Saturday and hit 62 against Denby.

Randall featured in stands of 66, with Andy Smith, and 77 with Mandla Mashimbyi, before he was third out, leg before wicket to Peter Furstenburgh, with the score on 143.

Matlock's innings slipped away to 201-9 and it proved not to be enough as Denby charged to victory by six wickets in less than 39 overs.

Anil Bria (40), Lucas Carlisle (53), Joe Greenhalgh (43 not out) and Ben Perry-Taylor (38) all scored freely.

Saturday's hot weather was enjoyed more by batsmen than bowlers, with Shipley Hall hitting the day's best in Division One, 266-7, in which Josh Buckley hit 106 not out.

Stainsby Hall replied in kind, with 111 for their South African, David Smyth, but they closed 24 short on 242-5.

Jonny Guthrie hit 109 not out in Swarkestone's 257-3 against bottom club Nutbrook, who replied with 236-7, Dave Hack hitting an unbeaten 103.

Marehay eased their relegation fears and put Staveley Welfare in trouble, winning by eight wickets.

Neil Sparham took 3-11 as Staveley were bowled out for 108, then Daniel Watson hit 59 in a reply that took up only 19.2 overs.

Belper Meadows fast bowler Asad Ali took his tally for the season to 68 wickets with a spectacular 8-31 in Division 2N, as Meadows saw off neighbours Belper Amateurs by seven wickets.

Caleb Mierkalns scored 124 as Division 2S leaders Sawley & Long Eaton Park racked up 346-5. Spondon seconds lost three points for a slow over rate as they laboured in the field but they did manage to hang on for a draw at 177-9.
