FRIENDS of tragic Burton student Luke Campbell are organising a memorial event to celebrate his "amazing" musical talents.

The 20-year-old was found stabbed to death in Bournemouth just months after moving to the area to study IT and business at the town's university.

Before his death, Luke had recorded a CD of rap songs which his friends will play as part of the tribute.

The event, to be held at the Caribbean Centre, in Burton, will also involve his friends singing and rapping to songs they have written in his memory.

Organiser Sevgi Zurnacioglu said the idea was to "make a stand together through music" in an effort to halt knife and gun crime.

The 19-year-old said: "We've had enough of people being killed and we want to show through music that our voices can be heard.

"We know we're not going to change the world but we want change, and we're hoping this event will encourage other youngsters to set groups up within their communities.

"Luke was so talented and we want his voice to be heard. We're going to be selling copies of his CD and hope to have some of his songs played on the radio."

Luke, who had also lived in Belper and Burton, moved to Bournemouth at the same time as his mother, Hazel, before starting his four-year degree course.

He was a former pupil at Murray Park Community School, in Mickleover, and also attended Bemrose Community School before studying at Burton College.

A member of the public discovered his body in the garden of a house in the Boscombe area of Bournemouth in November and Dorset police launched a murder investigation.

Miss Zurnacioglu said the event was being organised to not only remember Luke but also other victims of knife and gun crime, including 15-year-old Kadeem Blackwood, who was shot dead in Derby three days after Luke's death.

Local dance groups and breakdancers will perform on the night.

T-shirts of Luke will be printed and a buffet of Caribbean food will be provided, paid for by donations from local businesses.

Rapper Darren Evans, 21, will perform songs written in memory of Luke, alongside the victim's cousins, David Jones and Nathan Lewis. The trio are part of a band called Virus Crew and all have recorded songs in tribute to Luke.

Darren, who has recorded a song called Don't Forget, said: "We're hoping to sell the CDs in order to raise money for a charity campaigning against the use of knives."

The event, costing £5 per ticket, is still in the early stages of organisation but is set to take place on Friday, February 27, and ticket information is available by calling 07846 473710.

Delaine Gordon Brown, of Wyndham, London, and fellow Londoners Larbi Mohamed, 20, of Southwark, and Saeed Alkadir, 21, of Lambeth, have all appeared before magistrates charged with Luke's murder.
