THE number of swine flu cases in the East Midlands rose to 147 last night.

Health Protection Agency chiefs confirmed 11 new cases in the region, but did not say how many of those were in Derbyshire.

Five hospital staff in Derby are known to have the virus, as well as four pupils at Trent College, in Long Eaton, and an inmate at Sudbury Prison.

Across the UK, the total infected was 7,447.
