Remember, men are also victims of abuse at home
I READ that Derby Women's Centre has been given a £500,000 lottery grant which will ensure its future ("Women's Centre is saved and will increase help", March 16).
I have no problem with that and think it is good news as the centre does a sterling job. However, I read it is there to help women who have been victims of domestic abuse. The question I asked myself is, where do men go who are subjected to domestic abuse (not that I fall into this category)?
Current statistics suggest that 40% of domestic abuse victims are in fact men – but it is not widely known that men do suffer from this form of abuse. I do feel that men in general get forgotten about by the media. You rarely see any articles about men who suffer from breast cancer, for example.
So I would like to see more coverage of these issues and perhaps the Big Lottery Fund could bear these issues in mind when looking to give grants. I am not a male chauvinist pig, far from it. Nobody should suffer any form of abuse and steps should be taken to help those who do. Please just don't make it seem that only one sex suffers.

“http://tinyurl.com/ctezwcz - specifically to tackle the problem you mention. I agree the issue of domestic abuse suffered by men should be highlighted more.”

“Well said Bob, men are discriminated against a lot now with female only gyms, clubs, swimming sessions, sports sessions, self defence classes etc now its spread to refuges and help for domestic violence victims. This is a hidden issue with many men not reporting or speaking out through fear of being ridiculed.”
