Revamp of Council House branded an 'embarrassment'
THE deputy leader of Derby City Council has branded its new-look £36 million headquarters as "embarrassing".
Labour's Councillor Ranjit Banwait said it was "ridiculous" that the refurbishment of the Council House had taken place during times of austerity.
It was a project which was signed off by the previous Conservative-led council and supported by the Liberal Democrats.
The current leader, Labour's Paul Bayliss, recently admitted a change of heart over the controversial refurbishment, saying the building had the "wow factor".

But his deputy, Mr Banwait, said his views had not changed.
He added: "It's a huge embarrassment. It's been built at a time of huge Government cuts and my fear is that we'll be left with this shining new Council House with a chief executive inside twiddling his thumbs because there'll be very few services left to run from it.
"One of the officers who showed me round asked me if I was impressed and I said 'no'. The quality of the building doesn't come into consideration when you juxtapose that with cuts to services and redundancies."
