A POORLY maintained footpath in Ripley looks set to become an official public right of way after pressure from councillors and residents.

Derbyshire County Council is currently in the process of taking over control of the route from Butterley Hill to Carr Wood, Bridle Lane.

A six-week period, in which people can object to the High Court about the order, will end on Thursday, March 25.

Town councillor David Williams said the change followed pressure from councillors and residents and would make it the county council's responsibility to clear the path.

He said: "This would mean the county council is responsible for the maintenance of the surface of the footpath and clearing undergrowth that are causing an obstruction.

"It would also be the council's duty to ensure neighbouring landowners keep the footpath free from overgrowth."
