THE number of people who have quit smoking in Derby is rising, according to new figures from health bosses.

Latest figures from Derby City Primary Care Trust show that 157 smokers in the city kicked the habit in the first two weeks of the year, against a target of 85.

The trust measures the numbers who quit for at least four weeks, so there is a delay in recording and reporting the figures.

Over the last financial year, 2007-8, the trust topped its stop-smoking target, helping 2,554 people to stub out the habit, against a plan of 2,510. The trust offers individual and group stop-smoking support services. Call Fresh Start on 0800 7076870.

“Prehaps if we didn't have to pay thousands of people around the county to be sat in offices compiling statistics on this that and the other we have to pay so much tax. Who cares and what difference is this going to make to anyone? If someone wants to quit, give them help. It's not complicated.”
