A PROCESSION will run through Ilkeston this month to mark the Chinese New Year.

It will begin at Erewash Museum at 5.30pm on February 13, and finish at Ilkeston Market Place at 5.45pm.

Leading up to the finale event, artists will be going into 14 schools and community groups to make lanterns, banners and a large tiger. They will also help choreograph dragon, tiger fan and ribbon dances with Chinese percussion.

Following the procession, children will perform the dances in the Market Place.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council's lead member for culture and leisure services, said: "The Festival of Light has been an excellent programme of events with the Chinese New Year celebrations providing a fantastic finale involving local schools and community groups."

As a result of the procession, roads in the town will be closed.

Erewash Borough Council has made an order that Market Place, from the top of Burns Street to East Street, will be closed to cars from 5.30pm until 7pm.
