FORMER Derby County skipper Robbie Savage is the latest to back Rams striker Conor Sammon.

Sammon has yet to win over all of the fans since his £1.2m move from Wigan Athletic in the summer.

Criticism of him from some supporters increased when he failed to convert a late penalty in the 1-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace a week ago, but he did score in the draw at Cardiff on Tuesday to take his tally to eight goals in 37 games.

Manager Nigel Clough, and coaches Andy Garner and Johnny Metgod have backed Sammon, and now Savage has told the striker: "I've been there, don't get down on yourself, just keep working hard.

"Keep going, keep believing, you are doing the right things. You will win the crowd over, you've done great."

Savage had to dig deep to win over many Derby fans in his time at Pride Park, but he did not win over all of the fans.

Fans generally support their team I'm a season ticket holder with my family win loose rain or shine I love going to watch derby. Love the club or go pot holing at the weekend and leave this site to people who have good or critical things to say on not this pointless stupid bile that you continually drip over this forum..”

“Yes IbelieveIdo, Nathan did go a bit over the top but if I remember right he got fined for it after as did our lad for brawling. Not looking forward to tomorrow as St Andrews is a bit of a dump but after our performance at Cardiff I reckon we can get a result if we play anything like. Not quite sure who he will put in at RB though ass both Bray and Freeman are out. With Forsyth and Martin looking to impress we could have too much for Blues.”

“Yes old incidents tend to remain in supporters minds and Sav's penalty incident from his days at Foxes was one such unwanted memory. There were some who could not forgive him for that crass moment of celebration when he realised he had conned the ref successfully. It should not have happened, as he knows only too well, but we all do silly things which enrage people when we are young and he is no different. We have had worse things to think about since that time some years ago and no doubt we shall have more in the future. Such is Life!!”
