FORMER Rams hero Robbie Savage was the star guest at last night's Young Achievers ceremony – and he was full of praise for the youngsters to whom he presented awards.

The retired midfielder, whom others recognised from his spell on Strictly Come Dancing last year, said he was in awe of those collecting well-deserved accolades.

Savage said: "The kids here tonight are amazing. Many of them have had to fight terrible illnesses while others have achieved great things.

"I'm delighted to be here tonight. I have two young sons myself and I think it is important to recognise young people who deserve to be praised.

"It's nice being back in Derbyshire. I still have a lot of friends here from when I played for Derby."

Handing out the awards alongside Savage was the chairman of Derbyshire County Council, Councillor George Wharmby.

He said: "This is the second time I've attended this awards ceremony as chairman of the council and it is one of the highlights of my year.

"We're presenting awards to young people who really, really deserve them.

"We're finding out what is great about young people in Derbyshire. These awards cross the whole spectrum – dealing with illness, sporting achievement, kindness in helping others and commitment to improving the community. It opens our eyes to what is being achieved in Derbyshire."

Also in attendance was the council's cabinet member for young people, Councillor Barry Lewis. He said: "Here tonight we have an astonishing group of young people. Some have been through tremendous things in the face of awful adversity and are very deserving of these awards."

Before the glitzy ceremony, winners and guests were entertained by artists performing fire tricks, plate-spinning and balloon modelling.
