MATLOCK overcame travel problems to record an impressive 30-7 victory away to Kettering.

The Matlock team coach blew a tyre on the journey to Northamptonshire but it did not prevent Alan Johnson's men from arriving in time for kick-off – or distract them from the job in hand.

"It was a good performance, especially considering our coach blew a tyre on the motorway on the way there," said Johnson.

"We were about 20 miles away when it happened but the driver managed to get us there by driving very slowly.

"Luckily, we managed to get the tyre changed while we were playing, so we were able to get home OK."

Matlock started well and took an 18-0 lead midway through the first half, with tries from James Young and Jack Wagg, plus two penalties and a conversion from Chris Young.

Kettering responded with a converted try before the break but the visitors secured a bonus-point win with further scores from Dan Hooton and Henri Packard.

"Kettering have had some really good results recently, so it was a great win for us," Johnson added.
