Saints hit four as Rams slip to defeat
DERBY County suffered a 4-0 defeat against Championship promotion hopefuls Southampton at St Mary's Stadium.
The Rams trailed to a 15th-minute Jos Hooiveld goal at the break but second-half strikes from Aaron Martin, Adam Lallana and Tadanari Lee sent Nigel Clough's side to their joint heaviest loss of the season.

Victory sent the Saints to the top of the table, with title rivals West Ham United not in league action.
Defender John Brayford and midfielder James Bailey were recalled to the Rams' starting line-up.
Brayford returned at right-back after missing two matches with a thigh problem, allowing Paul Green to move into midfield.
Left-back Gareth Roberts was passed fit to play after shaking off a leg injury but midfielder Craig Bryson (heel) missed a league match for the first time this season, while striker Callum Ball was dropped to the bench.
Nathan Tyson and Jamie Ward started up front in a 4-4-2 formation, with Green and Tom Carroll on the right and left wings respectively.
Lallana beat Brayford in the sixth minute and cut the ball back for Morgan Schneiderlin but his low effort was cleared by Jason Shackell.
Moments later, Tyson sped down the left but his cross-shot fizzed narrowly over.
Rams keeper Frank Fielding was almost caught out by Harding's teasing free kick from just inside the Derby half but gathered the ball at the second attempt.
The respite was short-lived, though, as the home side took the lead after 15 minutes.
Danny Fox whipped in a corner from the right and Hooiveld managed to bundle the ball into the net from six yards out.
It was all Southampton and they nearly doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.
Harding picked out Lallana just inside the box and he turned neatly before bending a left-foot shot inches wide, with Fielding beaten.
Lallana went close again before the half-hour mark but prodded wide under pressure after Shaun Barker - making his 100th appearance for the Rams - was caught in possession.
Shortly afterwards, Harding's cross on the overlap ran all the way across to the unmarked Rickie Lambert but he lifted his first-time effort over the bar.
Derby were eventually able to create some pressure of their own.
Ward's corner from the left caused problems for the Saints but nobody was able to apply a finish.
Then, in the 42nd minute, Carroll's flag kick was headed on by Barker and cleared as far as Ward, whose well-struck shot from the edge of the area was well saved on the goalline by Kelvin Davis.
At the other end, Fielding was twice more called into action before the end of the half.
First, he kept out Jack Cork's fierce low drive and gathered the loose ball with Billy Sharp ready to pounce.
And in added time, he superbly tipped over Lambert's vicious free kick from all of 30 yards.
Southampton made a double change at the interval - Lee replacing Billy Sharp and Martin coming on for Hooiveld.
Derby started the second half brightly but the game turned definitively in favour of the hosts before the hour.
Lallana's effort was palmed over by Fielding after Lambert had scooped in a cross from tight to the left by-line.
From the resulting Fox corner, with 57 minutes on the clock, the ball dropped to Martin, who hooked a shot high into the net from eight yards.
Ball immediately came on for the limping Brayford, with Green moving to right-back and Ward to the right wing.
The third goal came in the 64th minute. Fox was played in on the left and nicked the ball past Green before crossing for Lallana to steer a volley past Fielding from eight yards.
Ball forced Davis into action with a long-range effort but Derby went further behind 15 minutes from time.
Lambert found Lee on the edge of the box and he unleashed an unstoppable rising shot that arrowed into the top corner.
Derby substitute Steve Davies tried his luck with a couple of efforts late on but could not find the target with either.

“Any chance of a flood light failure when we play Leicester? Does anyone who's in charge of the National Grid locally?”

“NC has no idea at all, I witnessed the diabolical performance yesteday, southampton a good team overall but who were in very patchy form, the saints offered little, but Derby offered nothing, poor tactics, poor motivation, the players are not playing for NC. These are his players, how many players could we sell for a profit or anyhting at the moment, Brayford and Ward yes, the others simply No, that says it all, we have hard working players and nothing, nothing at all. The dramatic drop in attendances counts for a lot, the supporters are bored of the negative no plan B tactics NC decides on.
NC to go for me, and before everyone goes on about who would you have - Lee Clark, Curbishley etc, or look at someone for example with previous experience who is hungry and had to rebuild and team plays football on the ground and players are worth something, Eddie Howe at Burnley .
NC out now, I am bored of boring football”

“We have too many British players in our team/squad, I want to know why we're not looking in Europe for 2 playmakers for a much cheaper price or loan this season. Dont get me wrong I would love to see our team fully British/young but quite simply European players have more flair/technique than British players....we need a creative spark, not bringing in young midfielders/strikers from British clubs who won't be our future.”

“Stagnation. Inherent throughout the board, management system and group of players. We aren't going to compete with the better teams in this league without MORE money, NEW ideas and BETTER tactics.
Everyone involved seems happy with the way the club is progressing and quite frankly that is quite sickening. It would be okay if board and manager alike were aware of our current form and came out and said they were unhappy but they seem all too reluctant to do this. I know that Southampton are a very good team but (I wasn't there so I can't give too much analysis) it seemed like we went there with the attitude that if we didn't lose it would be a surprise. It's the same attitude we approached the Stoke game and it doesn't work.
At the end of the day we are in this division because we deserve to be and therefore we should take any game with at least some degree of hope and optimism, we've shown we can at least compete. So it really is quite saddening that 5 years since our last premiership season we are happy with going away to Southampton and getting turned over and taking it on the chin.
We NEED a response and we need it SOON. That goes for playing staff, management and board members. I just want some acknowledgement that we should be progressing further and therefore look to invest in order to push us towards a better future.
Last season we were desperate for a left back, a commanding (maybe creative) midfielder and a striker.
This season we still want the same things and this shows how little we have progressed and also a lack of ambition.”

“Yesterday just goes to show that if we don't have certain players playing in the right positions, like Green on the right Bryson in the middle brayford at right back all game, this team is shot, being honest we don't have anything other than a team as no depth at all, I for one don't want us to do a pompey or Rangers, however we should be able to compete and still not go bust, as we now have one of the lowest wage bills in the league as confirmed by NC / GSE
This in my humble opinion isn't good enough for Derby County and what we have previously achieved.”

“Got to admit the noises coming out of the club are not positive in the slightest. We can look at the current scenrio in 2 ways:
1. Prudence and stability in building a long term strong unit of players without any fly by night "billy bigshots". A business model along the lines of Norwich and Swansea by utilising youth and good "afforable signings".
2. The likes of Doncaster and Coventry having bigger wage bills than ourselves. Now I know that we shouldnt throw money at the matter as Ipswich are a fine example of throwing money at a cause and yes they have quality players but a **** manager as well.Tthey will fair little better than us and have a massive debt although this will probably be underwritten.
Personally I fall between the 2 stools of steady building as we have a better squad than the last few years but we are seriously lacking in quality. What we ned are 1 or 2 players who can turn a match with a flash of magic. We havent got that.
The club want us to dig into our pockets now, well I want the club to raise the bar in the summer and buy a couple of players who will lift the quality standard. No need for a mass of signings as the foundations are there.
Shopping list:
Out - Permenant moves for all the players out on loan
Maguire? maybe if we get offered £200k and he moves back up north
Addison - Unfortunatelly but i see no future as he doesnt look the player he was. A good pre season will determine his future. An offer of £300k may secure his services.
Any offer of over £2M for our better players should be take seriously as that will enable the purchase of 2 or 3 quality players. Brayford, Shackell and Ward drop into that category and dont be suprised if a cheeky bid comes in for Bryson who has done well. Dont want to lose any of the youngsters.
In - A quality left back with height and will overlap. A midifelder who can change the game, maybe a forward but to be fair we do seem to have a few although you could say quantity rather than quality. What we need to do is to look down the league as tehre are players out there. You could get someting special for £1M as the Prem dont look outside of their bubble.”

“In my opinion Nigel Clough is one of the worst managers in the championship. Those who continue to remain loyal and believe in him are quite frankly deluded. The facts are that he has never ever been a good football manager. He took 10 hard years at Burton to get them up a couple of leagues and he had plenty of financial backing there. He simply does not have the necessary skill, experience or desire to take our club any further. Every match he sets his stall for a 0-0 has no tactical awareness what so ever. He has his own set of players which he likes and simply freezes out players who he does not get on with (Commons, Cywka, Croft, Martin, Maquire, Addision, Pearson, Leacock)... The list is endless! He has actually had more financial backing in the last 3 years then a lot of championship clubs, but his signings are woeful and his poor man management skills means he never actually gets the best out of players anyway. The games we have actually won this year and been quite lucky. I am bored of saying Nigel has done a great job with his financial constraints - wrong. The lump it up football we play, the incorrect formations we play, the lack of direction players get during a game is poor. People say who will replace him how about any one of the following looking for work; Mick Mcarthy, Billy Davies, Lee Clark, Alan Curbishley, Paul Ince, Gordon Strachan, David Jones... anyone would do a much better job then Clough and an inept florist coaching team. Clough has made zero progress with the club and those who keep on supporting him and helping in the demise of our beloved club.”

“Our major summer signing from Nottingham Forest Nathan Tyson has been a breath of fresh air for Derby County this season.
His goals, assists, pace, small wages and great injury record surely make him one of our best ever signing.
I bet Forest supporters are gutted that they have lot such a goal machine from there misfiring forward line.
And i'm with ibelieveido Nigel Clough is a great manager and will win us promotion to the premiership and get us into the champions league within the next 5 years.
Now our fully fit defence is performing well and keeping clean sheets and we have got Nathan Tyson banging in the goals we can get automatic promotion this season.
idobelieveido is right Nigel Clough isn't non league Nigel, he is premiership Nigel.
And between Nigel Clough and Nathan Tyson we have all we need to fire our way, all the way to the top of the championship and then premiership.
COME ON YOU MIGHTY RAMS.........”

“Always thought that a scoreline like this might be on the horizon for us. We arguably have one of the best centre half partnerships in the league but our back five can't be expected to win us games for ever. Our lack of attacking options and cutting edge means we are just absorbing too much pressure. I understand setting your stall out away from home and trying to nick a game but you have to be winning your home games for that to be successful.
I think some fans want us to end up like Pompey but we either need to see a long term plan building a quality side of our own or at least invest some sensible money in new players - and not one's that are no better than what we've already got!”
