CHELLASTON School's application to create an £800,000 artificial pitch on its site was taken off the agenda only hours before the planning meeting.

Council officials said the applicant had asked for the item to be deferred until the April meeting to allow for a noise monitoring survey to be carried out

The application has been dogged by controversy and is currently the subject of a judicial review over the way the original application was handled last year before it was approved by the city council's planning committee.

The latest application, which has again been opposed more by than 100 residents, had been made with an accompanying environmental report requested by the committee.

Phil Bailey, representing the Chellaston residents opposed to the plan, said he had submitted a noise report as evidence for last night's meeting.

He said: "I was disappointed that the item was only deferred and not withdrawn altogether."

The floodlit artificial pitch is intended for use by pupils and sports clubs but local residents have said that they would suffer from light and noise pollution.

“The solution could have happened in July 2008 however the school are not prepared to talk to the residents about the problem an all weather pitch will have on us. If it was just for the school children then this would already be there.”

“As we enter another weekend of called off rugby and football games due to rain and wet pitches, it is very sad that a solution to these problems has been delayed yet again. I really hope this pitch is approved as sport in this area desperately needs these facilities.”
