A series of incidents on the A38 caused traffic mayhem yesterday. The first involved a lorry that shed its load while travelling along the northbound carriageway between Kingsway and Markeaton Roundabout at 3.40pm. About 40 used car batteries were spilled on to the road, causing battery acid to leak out. Firefighters had to work fast to prevent the toxic liquid from slipping into drains. One lane was closed for more than four hours. Later, during the evening rush-hour, an accident involving another lorry on a roundabout caused delays in both directions of the A38 near Alfreton. And at 6.45pm, four cars and two lorries crashed on the northbound carriageway near Mickleover, closing one lane. Police said there were a number of casualties, although none of the injuries were serious.
