A SHAKE-UP of city centre bus stops in a bid to cut delays at Derby's bus station will take place this summer.

The change, confirmed by Derby City Council's cabinet this week, will see two new bus stops created in Morledge so that passengers can choose to be dropped off there instead of the station.

  1. Trent Barton bus

One would be immediately outside the Crown Court building and have space for two buses. The other would be adjacent to Shopmobility.

Buses are currently arriving at the bus station to find that their designated bay is occupied by an earlier service dropping off all their passengers.

They have to find an alternate bay to pull up in. Then, when the designated bay is clear, they leave the bus station and re-enter to park in the correct bay. The council hopes the Morledge bus stops will reduce the chance of this happening.

Bus passengers have asked if the changes mean they would have to alight in Morledge or whether the buses would continue to drop-off remaining passengers at the bus station.

A council spokeswoman said: "The purpose of creating bus set-down facilities in Morledge is to enable bus passengers, where they want to, to alight from the bus in advance, but not instead of, it entering the bus station."

Blue badge parking will move from outside the court to Full Street and underneath the Riverside multi-storey car park.

“"Buses are currently arriving at the bus station to find that their designated bay is occupied by an earlier service dropping off all their passengers."

I didn't realise that Arriva buses held the same amount of passengers as a Boeing 747 Jumbo jet.
If the schedules don't allow for loading/offloading and a reasonable turnaround time then there is something wrong. Many passengers can testify to delays, ballet performed by constantly manoeuvring buses trying to evade eachother resulting in a few bumps and general chaos. I have spoken to a few drivers and there are more minor scrapes in the bus station car park than en route anywhere else. The station is an embarrassment, a result of bad planning, no proper consultation with Joe Public, no common sense and the normal 'cobble it together' solution that we have come to expect from a bunch of amateurs who have no idea what they are doing. Business as usual. SNAFU.”

“Oh dear Mr Dragon does that mean all your threats to see in court anyone who disagrees with your opinions on here are now invalid as you cannot walk the 50 yards from Full Street to the courthouse?
All those slander, libel, harassment and cases of malicious reporting that are going to have to be dropped!

(I'm sure if there was a genuine requirement then the court services would make suitable arrangements to assist anyone required to attend and struggling with the distance, for the rest I'm sure moving the spaces slightly closer to market square will be appreciated)”

So disabled people are effectively being denied access to the court - how considerate;.”

“People want to be in the warm and have good seating when they are waiting for buses so the bus station should be extended to accomodate all of the buses and there should be heating for the passengers too. (Even more so with the likes of the weather we are having at the moment).”

“How often have educated qualified council planners, consultants and councillors got it wrong for Derby whilst joe/josephine public with experience and common sense have seen what the future holds. Ufortunately common sense, local knowlegde and being joe/josephine public are not acceptable qualifications. That is why we will continue to see inadequate building projects and poor decisions made to spend our money not once but twice or more on each project. The old Aslin station could have been modernised to become closed in and would have served better than what we have now. This was all about personal egos not public needs.”

“Where do these planners get their qualifications - Balamory?

Trolley buses - oggling the bikes in Palins while the clippie got the pole out because the driver had come round The Spot a bit too quickly :-)”

“I reckon they ought to build a new bus station on the Market Place and utilise the present one to accomodate the vehicles masquerading as taxis, oh, and lets bring back the trolley bus, no filthy diesel fumes and great fun when the poles come off!!

    ;-)”

“The problem is that the bus station is too small, the waiting areas do not have enough room for passengers to queue at the bays for the services they require; the solution was to put markings on floor to tell people where they should queue and where they should walk, as reported in the Telegraph on January 31st 2011, this cost £6,550.
http://tinyurl.com/c6ea6sr) "Bus station markings for orderly queues cost £6k".

Then the doormats at the main entrance needed replacing at a cost of £8,000
"£8,000 to replace two doormats at troubled bus station after heavy use makes them trip hazard". http://tinyurl.com/bre6cp8

The bus stops outside the Court were removed in 2010 because the bus station should be able to take all the drop-off and pick-ups. This had sparked off a public campaign to keep the bus stops, but the Council did not listen!

"CAMPAIGNERS are calling on the council to reverse its decision to remove several bus stops near the city's new bus station".
    http://tinyurl.com/cjzlbca
Now the Council is to spend another £100,000 to replace the bus stops they removed!

Many of the problems we are now seeing were highlighted by members of the public during the consultation period over the new bus station, but the Council paid no attention to the results of their "consultation" probably because the primary objective was to build a couple of hotels, restaurants and shops, with a small bus terminal to serve local bus services.

There are still "To-Let" signs on three of the main River Lights properties, the rest being occupied by a dining hall and a casino.

Maybe it is time for the Council to admit that the bus station is inadequate and that they should now reconsider the office developments on the Liversage site and build a new bus station that is fit for purpose? The alternative would appear to be to continue throwing hundreds of thousands of pounds at the bus station in the hope that they might make it work!”
