Detectives believe this could be linked to a violent raid at the at the home of a 93-year-old war veteran last Friday
Mr Singh, 58, who was alone in his shop when the gang burst in, fought back against the thugs to try and stop them escaping with his takings.
He said: "I was behind the counter when three lads stormed in. One started hitting me in the head with a bike lock and another grabbed the till and was shouting 'give me the money, give the money'.
"I held my arms out and grabbed hold of the one who was hitting me and got around the other side of the counter. I got hold of what he was hitting me with and, as he was running out, hit him in the back with it.
"There was quite a lot of blood around the store after it happened. I was totally shocked by it all and didn't really know what to do after it was over."
Mr Singh needed stitches in a head wound after the attack, which happened at about 8.45pm.
Detective Inspector David Cox said the three suspects stole cash from the till before running off along Wilsthorpe Road.
Police are investigating a possible link with three youths who robbed a 93-year-old war veteran at his home in Chaddesden.
The victim, a Marine in the Second World War, suffered bruising in the attack, last Friday at about 8.30pm.
The gang broke in through a locked rear door and escaped with a large amount of money.
Mr Singh was able to tell police that two of his attackers are white and both wore white bandanas over their faces.
One has blond hair and wore a grey hooded tracksuit top and dark tracksuit bottoms, while the second wore black trousers and a black hooded top.
Mr Singh said: "There are CCTV cameras where the shop is. It is not something you ever really expect."
Anyone with information about either of the incidents should call police on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“What is Erez rambling on about?
Those who commit crimes are criminals. Mr Singh and others like him in similar situations who try to defend themselves and their property, deserve to see justice meted out in appropriate style.
Showing compassion/understand for poor criminals only increases their contempt for the weakness of our courts and sentencing policies.
Sharia law has a lot to commend it in cases like this against one based on Christian virtues.”

“I'm surprised that this rat has not filed a complaint against Mr. Singh, I mean he has rights you know and to suffer injuries whilst in the course of his normal activity, surely the do-gooders would say that that he has a case?
I personally hope the rat suffers from any injury caused by Mr. Singh's actions. I agree the Police do need more funds to help, is there any CCTV evidence? are the cameras active? Or has the Council switched then off because they're ineffective? Chances are that he cameras are not monitored or they were facing the wrong way. Any images of the thieves should be published in the local paper and broadcast on all TV Channels as they have given up all civil rights.”

“I am amazed the Police did not arrest Mr Singh. People have been arrested in similar circumstances.
How dare he hit one of the poor little scum bags.
They should not have to face the risk of assault whilst performing a violent occupation of Mr Singh's shop.”

“Crimes like these underline the need for better funding for our police force, to give detection rates a chance to increase. Post code related crime spots should have more visible and regular
police police patrols, instead of them waiting in the warm somewhere for alarm calls to come in. Groups of three or more persons congregating after dark should be stopped and questioned (here's where indentity cards are useful) and I bet crimes of the sort reported here will decline.Just reading every day the familiar places should give a clue where more action needs to be taken.
Areas infested with pack hunting, uneducated, out of work rats .
Catch them and indelibly dye them (after a good public thrashing). No apologies, they deserve no sympathy ,they know what they are doing and believe they have nothing to lose by behaving as they are. To hell with human rights where these scum are concerned, let's protect those who try to run family businesses (and elderly frail people) who live by the law.”

“As stated here before, if we adopted what many American states do, and only permit 'off-sales' alcohol to be sold legally from designated 'liquour stores' In so doing, many of these shop keepers may be saved from experiences like this.
Alcohol sold from behind unattractive secure wire barriers ( to protect staff) may be the answer. Sad, but given the 'we have got nothing to lose' criminal mentality society may have to adapt to cope with that. Yes, a loss of an income stream but perhaps may save shopkeepers and staff from this type of experience.”

“A disgraceful story. I hope the Police throw the book at Mr Singh. Assault is a serious offence. The courts must make an example of this thug... a long custodial sentence is a must........ !?”
