THE best of Derby's shops will have the chance to bid to win a city retail "Oscar".

The Derby Retail Awards aim to find the best stores in the city and celebrate everything that makes the city a fantastic shopping experience.

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: "Having a strong retail offer in the form of Westfield, the Cathedral Quarter, St Peter's Quarter and other areas of the city is very important.

"These awards are a fantastic way of shining the light on this very important sector in the city's economy.

"Other retailers are seeing the success their competitors are having here and want to come in, which in turn creates jobs."

Shops in Derby can apply for nine categories, which are Best Store Merchandising, Best Window Display, Best Customer Experience, Best Sales Person, Best Store Manager, Best Shopping Break Destination, Best Independent Retailer, Best Multiple/National Retailer and Best Charity Retailer.

The tenth category is the Derby Telegraph Customer Choice Award, which will be voted for by Derby Telegraph readers.

Judging for this category will be based upon nominations from the public and the award will be based upon both the number and content of the nominations.

This year's awards are supported by the Derby Telegraph, Derby College, Marketing Derby, St Peter's Quarter, Cathedral Quarter, Westfield and Irongate Group.

Entries will be judged by a wide range of industry professionals, drawing on experience, proven success and knowledge of all levels of retail.

The closing date is Monday, February 25.

The winners will be announced at a presentation ceremony at Derby College's Roundhouse campus on Wednesday, March 20.

Entrants must submit no more than two pages of A4 paper addressing the specific criteria for the category, which can be found by visiting www.marketingderby. co.uk/retailawards.

Entries can be sent via e-mail to events@round house-events.co.uk.

Alternatively, send entries to Derby Retail Awards 2013, c/o Roundhouse Events, The Roundhouse, Roundhouse Road, Pride Park, Derby, DE24 8JE.

“East Street is going to be even more dismal when HMV and the Co-op closes its doors for the last time. There are already plenty of empty shops along there without more going. Forkin is talking out of his backside.”

    “What utter nonsesne.

The city 'centre' has been decimated because of Westfield - poor planning has meant one half of the centre has simply become the equivalnent of cheap seats.

    When they say things like:

"...Having a strong retail offer in the form of Westfield, the Cathedral Quarter, St Peter's Quarter and other areas of the city is very important..."

Do they not realise that all you have to do is talk a walk through those areas to see a smattering of shops and boarded up units and derelict land? It's farcical that they think they can simply create 'Quarters' and think that this will fix everything - why not have a Duckworth Square Quarter too! - it's embarassing!”
