A CLIFF Richard fan was so excited about meeting her hero that she crashed her car after finding out that he would appear at the supermarket where she works.

Stock controller Jayne Mee, 42, will be among thousands of fans hoping to see Sir Cliff as he visits Asda in Spondon today.

The star, who has sold more than 250 million records over six decades, will be signing copies of his new autobiography, My Life, My Way, at the Derby Road store, and bosses predict fans from all over the country will flock to see him.

Mrs Mee, who first saw Sir Cliff perform at former Derby nightclub Talk of the Midlands in 1976, said she was on cloud nine when she heard her idol was coming to Derby.

She said: "I heard a rumour at work that he might be coming but I didn't think it could be true. I asked the managers and they said it was true.

"I just couldn't believe it. I was so excited.

"On the way home I was in a world of my own, just thinking about it, and I drove my car into my wheelie bin. Luckily it was only a minor bump."

Mrs Mee, who lives in Jubilee Road, Shelton Lock, with husband Nick, 48, has worked at Asda for seven years.

She has got most of Sir Cliff's albums, three of his perfumes and has travelled all over the country to see him perform.

She said: "I have been a fan since I was about four or five. I just like everything about him. What's not to love?"

Workers at Asda spent all day yesterday preparing for the event, sorting out the extra books that have been ordered and collecting extra barriers from nearby stores.

Home and leisure manager Martin Tuckwood said he had not slept since he heard the news.

He said: "We had to move fixtures and make space on the shop floor. I had to drive to all the stores in the area to collect any extra barriers they had for the queue.

"We're the only Asda to get Sir Cliff and I'm really proud to get him before he even appears in London.

"I am really excited and have not slept for about two months, thinking about the organisation."

A ticket system will be used to ensure as many fans as possible meet their hero.

Extra security has been arranged for the book-signing, which takes place between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. Police will be at the store to direct traffic.

Fans will only be able to queue for the book signing from 1pm. Anyone who tries to queue before that time will be asked to move on.

“She should not have been so distracted and careless when driving and besides. Besides its only Cliff Richard and are the police investigating this crash? Because if I had crashed my car into a wheelie bin then I would least get a visit from the local "friendly" police and also with me being young (23) I would probadly get a fine or maybe even points”

“Les and Nick have a point Di, this woman should not be on the road if she is so easily distracted”

“Di - you are right, they are not out mugging pensioners - mainly because they are all pensioners to begin with! How is it that these folk can find enough money to "follow" Cliff the evangelist but as soon as there is a gas bill to pay they are up in arms! In all seriousness the only sad and lonely people out there are the ones who will be smashing down the doors and climbing over each other to get a glimpse of that plastic face. Granted, Cliff's boyish good looks have almost turned me once or twice but thats a different story!”

“Luckily it was only a wheelie bin - who even thought to ring the telegraph about this story? Its good that Cliff is visiting Derby, and I will be keeping clear of Asda but I cannot help think that she could have killed someone. Typical of todays drivers - not enough attention paid to the road.”
