Smith and Clare see Derbyshire through
Greg Smith and Jon Clare led Derbyshire to their safety
target against Northamptonshire on the third day of their
LV County Championship match at Chesterfield.
Smith closed the day 70 not out and Clare 50 not out in an
unbroken stand of 97 for the sixth wicket which took Derbyshire
beyond the follow-on at 269-5, still trailing by 130.
Chris Rogers had earlier hit 57 and Dan Birch 41 but there was
still a danger that Derbyshire could be forced to bat again as
they lost their fifth wicket on 172.
The Northants first innings was wrapped up quickly in the
morning after they resumed on 382-6.
Charl Langeveldt struck in his second over as an edge from Alex
Wakely was superbly well caught by Rogers at first slip, diving
to his left to grasp the ball one-handed.
Wakely made 24 and night watchman David Lucas followed four
overs later when he was bowled by a full-length Langeveldt
delivery for 13.
Langeveldt had not finished and, in his next over, he had
Andrew Hall caught behind by Tom Poynton for 10. That gave him
final figures of 5-52 in 25 overs.
Northants were all out for 399, one run short of full batting
points, when Jason Brown was lbw to Graham Wagg, who finished
with 3-102.
