Derbyshire set Gloucestershire historic target
Derbyshire set Gloucestershire 398 to win in four sessions on the third day of their LV County Championship match at the County Ground.
By the close, the away side had moved on to 118-2, leaving them 280 more runs and Derbyshire eight more wickets to take for victory.
Gloucestershire have never made such a high total in the fourth innings in their history.
Excellent innings from Greg Smith, Graham Wagg and Tom New lifted Derbyshire to 431 all out shortly before tea as they looked to end their home season with a victory.
Smith and New added 135 for the fifth wicket before New was out for 58 at 288-5, caught at third man off a sliced cut.
It was the wicketkeeper's first half-century for the county and he faced 127 balls, hitting seven fours.
Smith was closing in on a second century of the season when he was bowled by Steve Kirby for 92, made off 190 balls with 17 fours, but an astonishing flurry from Wagg left Derbyshire even stronger.
He only faced 47 balls but made 72, with seven fours and four sixes before skying a catch to mid on.
Wayne White (18), Ian Hunter (one) and Charl Langeveldt (13) provided a further late burst, leaving Steve Stubbings 19 not out.
New dropped Kadeer Ali on four to allow the Gloucestershire openers to add 81 before Will Porterfield was caught for 24 at short leg off Wagg's left-arm spin.
Wagg also claimed Kadeer for 54 as New gratefully held his second chance.
