SNOW and ice are predicted to hit Derbyshire on Saturday - with forecasters issuing a weather warning for the East Midlands.

The Met Office said rainfall overnight is expected to turn to snow over the weekend, particularly on high ground, with one or two centimetres in Derby predicted.

Some parts of the East Midlands could see up to five centimetres of snow, the Met Office said.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Throughout Saturday that rain could turn to snow as it gets colder. But with it being March, and the ground being warmer, it will find it harder to settle.

“The snow could fall into the evening with maybe one or two centimetres on high ground. We don’t anticipate it being problematic.”

Some parts of the East Midlands could see up to five centimetres of snow, the Met Office said.

Forecasters also said ice on roads and pavements will be a risk, as temperatures start to drop.

They have issued a yellow "be aware" warning of snow for both Derby and Derbyshire, starting on Saturday at 3am and finishing at 9pm.

“Global warming - conjures up pleasant picture of UK becoming more like the Med - doesn't it just ...

But climate change is more accurate way of putting what we're getting - more extreme weather. Floods and droughts in same year - sometimes even in same area of England.”
