Soapbox, by Jeevan Dhaliwal:Fairytales written in the Bible are partly to blame for this sort of bigotry
I FIND it disturbing that I have to read letters that demean love because some ignorant readers believe heterosexual is the only way to marry or raise children ("Gay couples should not be allowed to adopt children", Opinions, March 5).
I see life in simple terms, good and bad.
You have good and bad gays, good and bad heterosexuals, just like you have good and bad among different races, life is too short to dictate choices based on ignorance.
I am sick of seeing religion used as an excuse to attack equal rights for homosexuals.

The Bible and religion are all produced by man, with little evidence, fairytales essentially, yet are used as reasons why homosexuals should not be equals.
We must not forget that the slave trade was often seen as God's will, the Mormon religion says dark skin is due to a curse, religion is blind faith without evolution.
I believe that this ignorance is due to generation gaps, stupidity, bigotry and belief in fairytales.
When a couple wish to marry, that is to show love and dedication to one another, it is that simple, no religious organisation should be able to decide what marriage is, even if marriage can be traced back to that church.
We have seen society evolve; just 40 years ago people were protesting that inter-racial relationships were unacceptable.
The law and society must continue to evolve for the better, let us not forget rape in marriage was not illegal until 1991, so why don't we evolve and allow marriage to be dictated by love and not ignorance and bigotry ?
Then we must also address adoption, children are evolving and becoming more accepting of those considered difference.
There will always be some form of discrimination towards children raised by homosexuals but that is down to the parents who raise bullies.
Why is a heterosexual couple better than a homosexual couple ? All that matters is how the child is raised, the love he/she is shown and the morals/values they are taught.
Who is Tony Birkett to tell us that children must "always be brought up in a heterosexual family atmosphere"?
A child should always be brought up in a loving family atmosphere, a heterosexual family doesn't mean a child will be raised to become a good, productive member of society.

“Religion has no place in deciding the rules of society - it is too divisive.
Everyvoloower of a religion believes there's is the one true road - all others being in error. Given the number of religions that means the vast majorityb are in error. When in fact they are all in error. What a ridiculous basis to decide on the framework for any society
Religion is a myth taught to the powerless by the powerful in hope that this will enable the maintainance of their power.”

“It should be considered a human right for children to know, and be able to associate with, both genetic parents. As medical science becomes more focused on genetic inheritance, particularly of life threatening conditions, then the importance of having a genetic profile of both your male and female parents is vital. If this can be achieved in any marriage combination then having same sex partners filling the role of parents is OK. What cannot be achieved is a child's right to a mother and a father figure. But hey, who in this politically correct world cares about the children anyway?”

“Agreed Oscardoodle. I also like irony, and find a huge dollop of it in the observation that those who preach liberality are the most intolerant of our species, as this letter page bears testament day in and day out.”

“Once again direct your vitriol at the Church to justify your inverse bigotry, Jeevan. I remember reading that the gay community used the term 'greedy' against bisexuals, since they wanted the best of everything. I love irony.........”

“I am fed up to back teeth of having gay this, homosexual that, shoved down my throat at every turn. I am not interested in the sex life of anyone, it should be a private matter between consenting adults but it seems some people take perverse pride in bleating theirs.
For crying out loud SHUT UP about it. The more you push the easier it is to annoy people who in turn become less tolerant.
I used to believe in live and let live but you are all seriously testing my patience and I am at the stage where am becoming very anti.”
