UNFINISHED business has prompted a special meeting of Derby City Council.

Councillors will meet on Wednesday to debate issues cut short at their last full meeting, at which the budget was debated and set.

But the discussion went on until after 10.20pm and was cut off so people could go home.

The remaining agenda items, including motions put forward by councillors, were left untouched.

The Mayor of Derby, Conservative councillor Sean Marshall, decided to set another meeting.

But the decision has angered Liberal Democrats.

Councillor Frank Harwood sad: "A number of the Liberal Democrats have vital meetings that evening that take priority and the Conservative Party is well aware of this.

"I also understand that the same applies to the Labour group.

"In view of the outstanding matters to be discussed, none are so important that special meeting needs to be held on this date and the Conservative group actions are, to say the leas, disappointing."

Tory leader Councillor Harvey Jennings said: "This was a mayoral decision and nothing to do with the Conservative group. As I understand it, there were two dates suggested by the mayor but the first, March 11, was not suitable for the Labour group."

He added: "We have not been involved in the scheduling of this meeting, we have just responded to the invitations from the mayor for a meeting to complete the council's business."
