ONE point decided the winners of the boys' event at this week's East Midlands Airport Derbyshire Year 7 Sportshall Athletics Finals – with Shirebrook School beating Buxton School to first place.

Meanwhile, in the girls' event, a team from Amber Valley took first place, with Derby's Woodlands School close behind.

The contest saw 16 teams from schools across Derbyshire compete, tackling a number of traditional track and field events indoors including obstacle relays, standing long jump and standing triple jump.

In the boys' event, Bolsover's Shirebrook School snatched a win with 211 points – ahead of High Peak's Buxton School with 210, which was five points ahead of the team from Amber Valley.

The winning girls' team from Amber Valley finished on 246 points, with Woodlands School in second with 220 and Bolsover's Frederick Gent School in third with 178.

Sponsored by East Midlands Airport, the competition was held at Alfreton Leisure Centre on Tuesday.

Schools from eight districts competed, with teams made up of either eight girls or eight boys. Every competitor received a certificate and the winning teams were also presented with trophies.

Sportshall Athletics is traditional track and field events brought indoors, using specially adapted equipment.
