A PROJECT aimed at encouraging more primary-age children to walk to school is being launched in Derby tomorrow

Stride with Pride has been devised by the city council's school travel plan team and it is hoping more children walking will reduce the impact on the environment of too many families using cars to take children to schools.

To promote the project, an interactive board game has been developed that will enable individual classes, year groups and schools to compete in a virtual tour of Derby.

Pupils are able to enter the number walking to school and the game records this data by moving a counter around the map. Classes and year groups can compete with each other to complete the route.

Certificates will be awarded to classes and year groups with the highest number of pupils walking to school.

The launch involves Mayoress Lisa Marshall and 15 pupils from St James' Junior, Markeaton Primary and Ashgate Primary. They will walk to sites on the map, including the Council House, Derby Cathedral, Silk Mill and Quad.
