Stewart has faith that Rams can still hit the heights

JORDAN Stewart says Derby County can bounce back from the bottom of the Championship to win promotion.

Derby's 2-0 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday saw the Rams replace the Tykes at the foot of the table.

Stewart points to Crystal Palace and Sunderland as recent examples of clubs who have recovered from poor starts to mount promotion challenges.

"We'd rather be at the top than at the bottom but there's only four games gone," said Stewart.

"We know we've got good enough players to get promotion but we know we need to get results soon.

"We can definitely still get promoted. I remember a couple of seasons ago when Crystal Palace were right near the bottom up until Christmas and then went on a great run and got in the play-offs.

"Sunderland went up after a slow start. The league is never won after four games. We've just got to keep working hard and I'm sure our luck will come good."

Derby were the better side for much of the match at Oakwell but failed to make their pressure count and were constantly frustrated by man-of-the-match Luke Steele in the Tykes' goal.

They were made to pay when Iain Hume hit a cracking half-volley from 20 yards to give Barnsley the lead after 71 minutes.

Stephen Foster's 82nd-minute header sealed Derby's fate.

"They only had a couple of chances and scored both of them.

"We had untold chances and their keeper has made a lot of saves," said Stewart.

"Even some of their players, who I spoke to after the game, thought we dominated for an hour."

“When done Billy. Actually it is possible that Harold has lost his last 36 verbal jousts - but we do not keep referring to his record as much as we could. When are you going to win your next Nottingham verbal joust Harold? I see that you are using the word Straw as one of your names. Ray Straw was an exciting Derby centre forward - brilliant with his head and part of a great team. His team mate Dennis Woodhead fought against Germany in WW2 and was a great left winger - Harold what time have you got for engaging with life [not war obviously] like Dennis Woodhead? - other than to tire yourself out with the time you have spent on 36 straight joust losses?”

“I don't have the time to stick around here all day but I must comment on something that is staring me in the face, it would seem that our tree lovers from down the road are desperate to get our manager out, I not only on see it on the message boards but hear it in my area (a town split 50-50 rams & reds). They know Jewell will turn it around soon and the fact that they feel insecure because they have a fear of the unknown in this league, they are trying to manufacture a tougher struggle for us than they are in for. They know that if PJ was sacked now it would put us in a very unstable situation yet agai, they see that as an opportunity to finish above us, (mind you I think we will need to end the season in the bottom 8 for that to happen). Sacking the manager at this stage will cost us a lot of money and valuable time for a new man to get to know the same squad, more importantly we would lose the opportunity to prove we can bounce back from last years adversity despite all the press snipers and faceless voices that sensationalise our recent demise simply because they can. A rally call to all true fans, stand up proud like a Ram, don't follow the 'Jewell Out' campaign like sheep. He WILL turn it around, the football was much improved at Barnsley and so we are moving forward, nothing was ever won before Christmas and I want to see where we are after 10-12 games not 4. Improvement has to be measured by performances first, then the points will follow, If the man who brought them to the club is sacked at this stage they would undoubtably lose more confidence, we have to ride it out and SUPPORT.
    Come on you Rams!”

“I'm not trying to compare the current team with the present or BC with PJ. I'm just pointing out that after his first complete season BC's team ended up with 38 points, and one point above being relegated. The point is that even the greatest motivator with some great players made us suffer a complete season before he began to get it right.”

“lets get this into perspective, you are trying to compaire paul jewell to brian clough, you are comapring roy mac, john o, alan hilton, kevin hector and alan durban to claude davis, andy todd, jay mac, robbie savage and kaz, are you feeling ok? to the best of my knowledge mr clough did get more than 6 points out of a possible 90 in his first 30 games, in fact those days it would have been out of a possible 60 points, your mind is still clouded by the spin jewell keeps regurgatating, but it will change, as it proved in the crowd on saturday”

“Those of us with long memories can recall that the great Brian Clough's first season at Derby ended just one point clear of relegation into the 3rd division. That was after signing Roy Mac, John O'Hare and Alan Hinton. King Kevin Hector and Alan Durban were already there. So I'm afraid it takes a bit longer than 4 games for a team to start playing together.”
