Wagg hits back after Stubbings is stranded
Steve Stubbings made a lone stand as Derbyshire were bowled out for 188 on the first day of their final LV County Championship home match of the season.
But a four-wicket burst from Graham Wagg then pulled Derbyshire back into contention as Gloucestershire closed on 98-6.
Stubbings, a late recall to the team following an injury to Wavell Hinds, was 62 not out most of his team-mates struggled in the bowler-friendly conditions.
Paul Borrington, in his first game since being awarded a new contract, was first to go before Derbyshire had a run on the scoreboard as he played inside the line of a Steve Kirby ball and had his off stump clipped.
Anthony Ireland struck with his third ball by having Dan Birch caught at third slip for 10 and Dan Redfern followed for three at 30-3 when he edged to gully.
Greg Smith was fourth out for nine, lbw to Ireland, to bring Stubbings to the crease for his first Championship appearance in two months.
There was a further blow three overs before lunch when Chris Rogers was caught behind for 40 off a rising David Brown ball and Brown was to become the unexpected destroyer for Gloucestershire.
Kirby had Tom New caught at third slip for one but Brown's medium pace then took out Wagg (29), Wayne White (nought), Ian Hunter (nought) and Charl Langeveldt (21).
Gloucestershire reached 62-1 in their reply but then four wickets for five runs in 19 balls from Wagg left them struggling at 74-5. The third of those was the bowler's 50th first-class wicket of the season.
Chris Taylor was run out at 87-6 to leave the away side in deeper trouble.
