A WORLD War Two bomb has been destroyed in a controlled explosion at Derby Racecourse.

The device was discovered in Alfreton Road by workers from George Wimpey who were working on a construction site in the area.

Police closed the road this morning while a military bomb squad moved in to remove the device.

It was taken to Derby Racecourse and blown up.

Alfreton Road was closed for two hours from 10.50am.

“Yet another example of the 'me me me' culture!!

Not a thought or mention to the Bomb Squad folks who turned up not knowing if it was a block-leveller or a party-popper; they put themselves at risk to protect the public yet this is the thanks they get?!!

"Nobody came and told me to do anything"... because you didn't need to do anything, that's why!! Drama queen...”

“The Racecourse is full of interesting stuff waiting to be dug up - it was a military firing range for a while”

“According to BBC regional news it was 'most likely' a detonator from a bomb, not a bomb. Any resident in the immediate vicinity was evacuated.”

“Chris, it kind of suggests that those 'in the know' knew what they were doing really, doesn't it? It must have disappointed so many who like to escalate a minor situation. Oh well...”

“Firstly, I was not making assumptions, simply the point that we don't necessarily know the circumstances, and secondly "I "wasn't being funny!!”

“An unexploded World War 2 bomb, but what type of bomb? a 500 pound or one of the thousands of small incendiary devices that were dropped by the Luftwaffe? I am sure if there was any danger to the residents they would have been advised to leave the area immediately. As the road was actually reopened at 11:15, I think we can assume it was not a serious incident.”

“Even if, and it's a big IF, either of your two assumptions are correct, posting on a website would not be high on the list of things I'd be doing. Would you? It suggests to me that Linda feels quite safe in the situation. Unless, of course, she isn't that close to it.”

“Did any of you consider that Linda maybe disabled? & even if she's not there could well be disabled in the area who can't evacuate themselves !! Just a thought.”

“I think you are being a little harsh on Linda here. Granted, she has the choice to leave but by my reckoning, the fact the the residents havent been evacuated suggests that they have not been informed... am I correct. In which case to find out by chance of stumbling across the news on a website is a little off.. would you not agree?”
