TIME AGAIN FOR THE BIG ONE AS POSTPONED FUN DAY PINS ITS HOPES ON BRIGHTER WEATHER
THOUSANDS of visitors are expected to attend a family fun-day in Chaddesden this weekend – two months after the event fell prey to bad weather.
The Big One, at Chaddesden Park, was due to take place on June 7 but heavy rain left the park waterlogged.
It will now take place on Sunday from 11.30am.
Throughout the day, there will be events for the whole family, including dance displays, a fun dog show, falconry display and fun fair.
Climbing walls, donkey rides, balloon-modelling and circus skills will also available for people to take part in.
Entertainment at the park will be in four zones – the animal zone, including the dog show, the cycling zone incorporating the park's BMX track, the dance zone with displays from three local groups and the sports zone, with a five-a-side football competition.
Rebranded from the original Chaddesden Carnival, the event is in its third year.
Organisers expect about 20,000 people – double last year's 10,000 crowd. A disused building in the park has been converted, at a cost of £35k, to a cafe to cater for the extra crowds.
The event will begin with a parade of people of all ages in fancy dress. It will leave Sussex Housing Office at 11.30am and will be led by the Derby Serenaders.
There will be a map of the site, along with timings for events in all of the arenas, handed out on the day.
A spokesman for the Met Office said the weather on Sunday in Derby was likely to be bright but "unsettled".
He said: "The outlook at this time is some periods of rain or showers with some sunshine in between."
