POLICE have asked for more details of a British National Party conference coming to Derbyshire so that they can plan the security operation.

The party, which held its Red, White and Blue festival in Denby for three years, has announced that its annual conference will take place in South Derbyshire in December.

Anti-fascist groups are planning protests during the three-day event.

Security at the Red, White and Blue festival cost police £500,000 a year but Superintendent Gary Parkin said he expected the conference bill to be lower.

He said: "We have had no confirmation of where the conference will take place or how many people are expected to attend. We are pressing the BNP for these details.

"We do not anticipate that the policing operation will be as large as the occasions when the Red, White and Blue Festival was held in the county."

The BNP said it would not reveal the exact location of the conference "because it is usually threatened by the left". But it confirmed that leader Nick Griffin would be the keynote speaker.

Last year's conference was held near Wigan and attracted protests from groups such as United Against Fascism.

Protesters gathered outside the conference venue, chanting "Black and white unite and fight" and "Smash the BNP". Dozens of police were called to separate rival factions.

Graham Lewis, secretary of Derby Campaign Against Racism and Fascism, said: "We will definitely be holding a protest, although we do not expect to be facing large numbers of supporters, because of the current division in the BNP. We would aim to keep it peaceful. We have no intention of turning it into a fist fight."

He said he would be "trying everything possible" to discover where the conference was being held.

Mr Griffin has written to BNP supporters, urging them to book a place at the 2010 conference. He wrote: "We are pleased to announce the BNP's Annual Conference 2010, which will take place at a first-class venue in the South Derbyshire area on December 10 to 12.

"This year's conference, unlike previous events, is going to be a spectacular combination of political speeches, audio-visual displays, training, policy debates, stalls and entertainment."

It would be at a "four-star venue complete with restaurant, bar and a whole range of suitable accommodation to fit your needs", he said.

“If the unwashed layabouts stayed away, you wouldn't need a police presence, saving money eh? It's not rocket science? Keep the fascist left away and EAW !”

“I despise the BNP and the Police in equal measure. The police have become the stormtroopers of a police state and carry out their perceived function with intimidation and violence, and the BNP would love to live in a police state on their terms. They are so very similar. This is funny though - dear band of ageing football thugs, please tell us where you are all going to get drunk and talk about sending em all back home, because even though we are the police, we can't find out for ourselves. The major problem of course is once the location becomes known, then the left wing hooligans claiming to be united against this and that will also pop along and cause trouble and it is these people who the police are scared of because they also do not like the police because of the way they have conducted themselves in recent years.during other protests and demonstrations. In essence, this is the police asking the fascists to tell them where the Marxists are going to be because they are scared!.”

“I am not a follower of the BNP, UAF or any other faction for that matter. But I do and so do the rest of us live in a democratic country, where people are free to support or follow whatever political, religious creed they wish too.
So the BNP want to have a conference in Derby, that is their right to, and that should be defended.
As to who picks the bill up for policing it? I am not a Catholic, so why did i have to pay with my taxes for policing his visit?
I am not a Derby County fan, so why should i let the police force that is paid for by my taxes be used to act as security at football matches (yes I do know that DCFC picks up some of the tab).
The day when you are told that you are not allowed to have a conference, rally, protest etc by any authority, is the day we should all give up and start to read Chairman Mao's little red book.
If the UAF kick off and try to disturb this rally, then the full forcew of the law should and ought to come down on the side of the BNP, because they have just as much right to protection as every other person in the country. Like it or not, it's all about democracy.”

“A little more information for you on the BNP Conference. From the point of view of all many opponents of this racist party, it isn't the potential for demonstrations that should be considered by the Venue (even if the details are successfully kept secret until the last minute ¿ which is doubtful ¿ demonstrations can be now be assembled in an hour or two, anyway), but whether or not they will actually be paid!

The BNP's finances are currently in such a parlous state (to the point that questions are being asked about their solvency or otherwise), that letters were recently sent out by their ¿Business Advisor¿ James Dowson to creditors offering a final settlement of just 20p in the Pound!

I'm certain that the BNP will not have been honest enough to have made any such booking under their own name. ¿Front Organisations¿ used in the past for venue bookings have included ¿British Heritage¿, ¿The Trafalgar Club¿, ¿The Indigenous Forum¿, ¿Civil Liberty¿ and ¿Solidarity¿. They may also attempt to book in the name of one or another of James Dowson's registered companies. Any conference venue thus deceived will be quite within their rights to cancel such a booking.

In the absence of a named Venue, many people have, for the last few days, been sending information about the BNP's past booking tactics and evidence of the state of their finances to suitable venues across South Derbyshire and adjoining counties.

Don't be surprised if Griffin winds up with a cancellation on his hands!”

“To answer George below - I did not state it would be a Bretby - it was only a suggestion based on my knowledge of the location - and it isn't in the village - the whole of the site is surrounded by a fence with the gated access off the main road.”

“I agree that the police should know where the meeting is to be held, but this information should not be broadcasted by the media. If the venue remains a secret location, only BNP members will attend, and this will not cause any disruption.
If the venue becomes public knowledge, we will have thousands of UAF members causing violent clashes with the BNP and police, this will cause major public disorder and will cost tens of thousands of pounds from the police budget.

Keep it quiet, let this pass without incident and not only will it prevent incidents like those we have seen in the past, it will prevent the BNP from gaining a load of free propaganda and media attention.”

“I agree with Goerge Cross of Derby about organisations paying for the policing. But as it is always the UAF who cause all the trouble, as they alreay cost taxpaers half a million pounds last year, they should foot the bill. If it was not for them you would not even notice the BNP were there.”

“The police, and by that I also mean the Derbyshire council tax payers, should not have to pay for any police presence this "conference" requires.
Given all the cuts we are looking at facing, why should money that could be spent on policing our communities be spent on policing this event - there should be a levy placed on all organisations that require police attendance, as there is for the policing at football matches, and in particular this backward thinking pigheaded policital group, who will no doubt require more presence than any other party, should pay for their policing.
If it is Bretby as taxpayer states (are we not all taxpayers) then I pity the people of yet another quiet Derbyshire village that will no doubt have the chaos and backlash of the protestors that will no doubt also turn up to voice their opinions.”

“I am surprised that Superintendant Parkin has not been able to find out where the event is being held. You would have thought that the venue owners would want to ensure police protection? From the description given above I would take a wild guess at Bretby Conference Centre which is on the Industrial Estate surrounded by a high fence and gated access - ideal for locking them all in !!”
