'Time capsule' house furniture on sale

A COLLECTION of 17th-century furniture is to go under the hammer at a Derbyshire auctioneers.

The discovery followed a routine inspection of contents at a house in Staffordshire by Etwall-based TV auctioneer Charles Hanson.

It includes oak press cupboards, 14 clocks and four double-poster beds.

Mr Hanson said the couple who owned the furniture had put together a collection of "the finest 17th century oak furniture and furnishings I have seen in my career". He added: "The property really had the feel of a time capsule. It was like going back in time to the period of Shakespeare."

He estimated one of the beds, dated to circa 1620, could fetch as much as £1,500 and an oak and fruitwood dining table, made in 1630, is expected make £1,000.

The items will be sold at Hansons Auctioneers tomorrow, starting at 11am. Items can be viewed today from 11am to 9pm.
