Tournament teams in £1,500 charity boost
BASKETBALL players in wheelchairs have raised more than £1,500 for charity from a sports tournament.
More than 24 teams from around the country competed in the second annual Joshua Ginns memorial tournament wheelchair basketball games.
The two-day tournament was held in memory of Joshua Ginns, 10, of Borrowash, who died of cancer in 2008. He was also a member of wheelchair basketball team Derby Wheelblazers
At the event, held at Mackworth College, teams composed of local businesses and charity Disability Direct, went head-to-head on the basketball court, with some of the top wheelchair basketball teams in the country playing each other.
The money, raised through the raffle and team entry fees, will be split between Ben's Den, which provides holidays for the families of terminally ill children and the Joshua Ginns Memorial Trust, which aims to purchase a caravan to enable more of these holidays to take place.
Joshua's mother, Clare Ginns, who helped organise the event with the Wheelblazers said: "The tournament was absolutely brilliant.
The turn-out was fantastic and through everyone's generosity we have more than doubled the amount raised last year.
"Ben's Den is an excellent charity that helped support us when Joshua was diagnosed and by buying a caravan we are hoping to further the crucial support they provide."
