RESTRICTIONS introduced in a Derby street to ensure the safety of weekend revellers are to be relaxed for some local businesses.

The changes follows complaints from businesses in the area of the Strand after the city council decided to "experimentally" close the road from midnight to 5am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The closure was first introduced on Friday, February 15.

Now the council has said there will be some limited exceptions, although it has not been revealed which businesses will be able to access the area.

David Gartside, city council head of traffic and transportation, said: "We understand that the closure is having an impact on some business owners who are having difficulty accessing their properties at this time.

"So we have introduced limited exemptions to allow some vehicles to access properties on St James Street, Corn Market and Wardwick.

"The intention of the exemption is simply to allow essential access for servicing vehicles and for property owners to access their premises."
