Troubled teens' friend is up for community award
A YOUTH worker who helps to turn around the lives of young trouble-makers in Allenton has been nominated for an award.
Laina Richardson, 27, who works full-time for Derby Community Safety Partnership, has been offering support to eight-to-13-year-olds for the past nine years.
She helps them both in the classroom and at out-of-school sessions, including at anger management workshops.
She also helps parents improve their relationship with their children.
Other successful projects aimed at youngsters include fire-safety courses, first-aid courses and activities such as arts, drama and sport.
Miss Richardson was nominated for a Community Champion award by friend Lara Knifton.
She said: "Laina's commitment and enthusiasm for her work has helped to prevent many young people from entering the youth justice system.
"Her natural ability to engage with young people has reduced crime and anti-social behaviour within the area.
"When she first started her job it took time for the local residents to trust her.
"But her resilient personality enables her to brush it off and return even more determined the following day."
Miss Richardson, who lives in Derby, said she was delighted to be nominated.
She said: "It's lovely to be recognised in this way. I love seeing the kids improve and absolutely love the role.
"It's important they're given the same chance as everyone else."
