Next door neighbour Michael Skinner, 33, said: "I heard a rumbling from next door, looked out my window and saw two stocky men running off.
"I saw him lying on the floor, there was a few spots of blood around him.
"The police turned up really quickly after that."
Mr Moss, according to local people, was looking after an elderly gentleman who lived in the house but he had been taken to hospital the week before.
Another neighbour said: "I can't believe it, I grew up with him and his daughter was my best mate. He was really nice."
A post mortem examination is due to take place today to determine how the man died.
Police are searching for two men seen leaving the building. Both men are described as being white, with one in his 30s and another in his 40s.
Officers are conducting house to house inquiries along Canal Street and crime scene investigators are completing forensic work at the scene, with a large white tent set-up in front of the house.
If you have any information call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
