MATLOCK Town lost for the first time in seven Evo-Stik Premier Division games despite a spirited second-half performance.

Hednesford Town looked every inch title chasers in a first half they completely dominated and Matlock could have no complaints at being two goals adrift at the interval.

In almost non-stop pressure from the visitors, Darren Campion struck the bar with a vicious shot before Aaron Rey put the Pitmen ahead in the 13th minute with a first-time effort from a corner.

Gradually, Matlock got into the match but poor final choices in and around the edge of the box let them down.

When Francino Francis scored from another set-piece five minutes before the break, things looked bleak for the Gladiators.

But they came out stronger after the interval and Massiah McDonald gave them hope with a low shot after 54 minutes to make it 2-1.

Four minutes later, however, Matlock keeper Jon Kennedy was caught out of position and Rey capitalised for a well-taken second goal of the evening to make it 3-1.

To their credit, Matlock battled hard towards the end and Joe Leesley pulled another goal back in the first minute of stoppage time.

In the end, it was not enough for Matlock, who now head to Mansfield in the FA Trophy at the weekend.

GRESLEY'S game against Romulus was called off because the Moat Ground pitch was waterlogged.
