THE first two cars of the new Toyota Avensis model rolled off the firm's Burnaston production line today.

Bosses hope the new Avensis, launched amid economic uncertainty and a flagging car sales market, will give a much-needed boost to sales and secure the future for 4,000 workers in Derbyshire.

Geoff Hoon, the secretary of state for transport, was invited to officially unveil the new model.

The MP said the Government would announce a series of measures on Monday to aid troubled manufacturing businesses like Toyota, JCB and Rolls-Royce.

“Let's hope that these cars do sell and don't end up rusting away standing in a field somewhere with countless others. Well done though to Toyota. It's about time a few others in this country started making more positive noises instead of talking doom and gloom.”

“Please Mr Hoon don't give any money to JCB unless they promise to make their diggers travel faster on the roads. I always seem to get stuck behind one doing 20mph in a 60mph limit.”
