The victim told officers that while he was on the floor a second man kicked him hard in the chest and he was also punched in the back of the head.
As he tried to stand up he said the men backed off and then ran away towards Cromarty Close.
He told officers he did not recognise the three men who he said were all wearing dark-coloured hoodies with the hoods pulled up to disguise their faces.
A police spokesman said: "The victim said the man who punched him was wearing black tracksuit bottoms and the man who kicked him was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms.
"He told officers all of the men were around 6ft tall but he did not see them close enough to say whether they were white, black or Asian."
Anyone who has any information on the assault or saw offenders fleeing from the scene at that time are asked to call the police on 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

“When will it be safe for the media to describe these 'men' as amphibians, scum, lowlifes etc.
Does it effect their 'human' rights to be called such? I'd love to turn on BBC news to see an anchor say that someone has been attacked by a gang of 'wastes of oxygen'. (Past tense, not wishing that someone gets attacked BTW).”
