VIDEO: Home Secretary Theresa May in Derby to support Police Crime Commissioner candidate Simon Spencer
HOME Secretary Theresa May came to Derby's Market Place today as the county prepares to elect its first Police Crime Commissioner.
During her visit, Ms May encouraged people to get out and vote in tomorrow's election and was lending her support to Conservative candidate Simon Spencer.

She said: "If people are interested in how law and order and the police are operating in their areas then should turn out and vote because it is the Police Crime Commissioner who will be holding the chief constable to account and setting the priorities for the police."

“I will not vote tomorrow for the whole thing is politicised.I do believe the police should be held to account but not by the politicians. The police would be better governed by an all party committee,by the way, best place for her photo call,Derbys public toilet, well it is on Friday and Saturday nights”

So what happens when the PCC decides he's not that bothered about organised crime, or domestic violence because they won't generate votes when he wants to be re-elected?”

“I won't be voting for any of them. I'd urge anyone capable of independent thought processes to do likewise. I really, really want to see what they do if they get about 15% voter turnout ...”

“We are meant to vote for the "person" with the best policies, not the one with the best political backing.
Said it before this is a paper position, MP's creating more pointless jobs to pay pointless people who will invariably make the decisions to suit another party's agenda and NOT the public's interest. Vote NO!!”

“Ian, you know that will not happen. It is surely better to vote for an experienced candidate who is also non-party political as this, I think, is where & what your argument is?”

“Strange that she should visit Derby now? Are the Conservatives worried that they are going to be beaten by an Independent? As from what I see & hear (twitter, colleagues) they are struggling. It is a pity she and colleagues could not have come earlier as it would have made the debate more interesing as opposed to coming the day prior to the election.
I've made my point clear in the past and am proud to say: Me, wife, kids, and the office are voting Rod Hutton, the Independent Candidate”

“I don't actually think it's a great move to replace Police Authority's with these new Commissioners on a huge wage.
Is the answer to any question really to add another set of politicians the mix, at a time when politicians and political parties have perhaps the lowest public trust possible?
Plus with the turn-out to be expected to be very low - are they going to have an effective mandate?”
