Mr Austen said: "It's a lovely atmosphere and it's great a really brilliant turn-out with people of all ages.

"Lewis seems to be enjoying it."

Cath Brannan and her two-year-old daughter, Evie, also came to see the big switch-on.

Cath said: "I think it's really nice to do community events like this in Mickleover. I know Spondon have a switch-on every year and it's great to be following in their footsteps."

Ben Everett, six, said: "I've had a lovely night."

His dad Richard said: "I grew up in Mickleover and it's really lovely to see so many people here. We're starting to feel very festive now!"
